Day 37Here we are. It is August. The rest of the summer will now fly by. It always does. I used to have a rule: no school work till August 1st. This was kind of a joke. While, for a few summers, I did no "official" school work in June or July, it is hard to turn the teacher brain off. It is always at work. But now that it is August 1st there is this sudden feeling in the air. It is telling me that the time for preparation is upon us. Yesterday, I actually did get one school related email. It was only my second of the summer. I was invited to an I.E.P. meeting that will take place in September. By the end of the day today the school related email count was up to FOUR. My phone was suddenly binging with texts from colleagues. One was even texting from Disney. It seemed like everyone's attention was beginning to shift.
It is August 1st and I did no real school work today. So, there is guilt. Maybe tomorrow. Likely, little will get done over the next two weekends. My daughter will be celebrating her birthday this weekend and we have guests joining us on the Cape for the following weekend. While I'd love to spend some weekdays at the beach when it is a tad more quiet, I'll need to start cramming work in here and there between the weekends. There is a fair amount of work I can get done from the Cape. I need to email my new students and their parents. Before I can do that, I need to create a new group in gmail. I need to set up my new Seesaw class. There was something I needed to do for Wonders too. Good grief, I hope it didn't need to be completed by August first! The classroom website, even though it is far more static than my webpage of years ago, still needs to be updated. However, the list of things I need to do at school. or at the very least, at home, is growing. I really do want to ignite my classroom library. That will take some time. I'd also like to rethink the way my room is set up. I'm not sure I'll make any major changes but if I don't explore my options I likely won't be satisfied with keeping it the way it is either. Then there is the business of actually cleaning the room. A stupid number of dead bugs accumulate in a classroom over the summer and even though I cleaned before I left it will be dusty and dirty. But my floors will sparkle. I love a sparkling floor! This cleaning is tricky business. I like to set out and handle the cleaning right away but clean too early and I'll be doing it more than once. Try to set up the classroom before deep cleaning and I'll be punished by my allergies. There are many things I'll need to design and print. The list includes locker tags, binder cover pages, getting to know you surveys, attitude surveys, parent surveys...the list rolls on. Today is August first. There are just 26 days until my official report back to school day. And, today is gone. Make that 25. No, wait, I did do a tiny bit of back to school shopping today. That's got to count for something!
